Listening To Your Body

Nurture Your Spirit

Fall has come to stay, and October is when the glory of the season truly takes hold. The weather cools, the air dries,
and the sun spreads its joy everywhere. In the more temperate parts of the country, the leaves begin to change, and Halloween is on the horizon.
 
For some, this time of year is a time to remember and honor their beloved dead; All Hallow's Eve is said to be a time when the veils between the worlds are thin, and we can be in touch with the spirits of our ancestors. Whether you hold with this tradition or not, this time of year is a time of contemplation, as we begin to turn inward once more with the cooling weather. It can be a time, too, to nurture your own spirit, and be in touch with what nourishes you.
 
Meditation For the Spirit
Find a quiet place to sit or lie comfortably. Don't worry about getting in a meditation position or keeping your back straight: the idea is to find a position that works for you and feels good in your body. Light a candle to bring a sense of the sacred to your space.
 
Begin by focusing on your mind. For most of us, this is where we live most of the time anyway. If your thoughts are racing, let them race; don't try to pin down any particular thought. If you have worries, feel free to speak them aloud. If you are thinking about what else you need to be doing, say that aloud, too. Let the thoughts that are in the forefront of your mind take shape, then let them go.
 
Bring your awareness to your breath. What is your breathing like as you focus on your mind? Is it shallow? Deep? Slow or fast? Do you feel like you're getting enough air? Give yourself a breath, and slowly let it slow and deepen.
 
As you breathe, notice how your body moves with your breath. What parts of you are moving? Your belly? Your chest? Your shoulders? Feel how you move, and feel how your breath supports your movement.
 
Bring your focus to your belly and heart - your center. What does your body want, need, right now? Connect with your desire. Connect with the feelings you have right now: are you sad? Happy? Tired? Aroused? Hungry? Bored? What does your body have to tell you about the simpler, more animal part of yourself, right now?
 
Finally, when you feel focused and relaxed, bring your focus to the place just above the crown of your head. Breathe, and listen for the voice of your spirit. Don't worry if you don't notice anything at first. Just keep breathing, and feel how there is a light in you that surrounds your whole being. You may experience this as a light that radiates out from your heart to envelop your whole body. Or as a warmth around your head that descends and connects with your heart. You may simply feel present, warm and solid, or charged with energy. Where does your spirit reside in you? How can you call upon it? What does it need from you?
 
When you have a sense of this, simply sit and bask for a while longer. You may see images or colors, or hear words; you may simply enjoy the silence. Some emotions may rise up in you; allow them to be present.
 
When you feel complete with this, thank all the parts of yourself: spirit, emotions, body, mind. Blow out the candle.
